LS26 : our Love Story

Every exhibition has a story behind it. This one has two narrators, so you are getting both versions.

Taking turns, from beginning to end

Our first day

Lionel’s POV

I had to get her past security on her first day, and I got her name wrong. Instead of Sasha, I called her ShaSha, and she gave me some wicked side eye and said, “It’s Sasha.” In my head I was like, “Which too-known girl kraa be this?” Later, during the induction session where I was presenting, someone gbaa, and we were the only two who caught on. We both tried to hide our laughter. Then our eyes met.

From that moment, I knew we would be very good friends. At the end of the day, we were walking out of the building together when he asked what I was doing after work. I said I was going to get my nails done, and for some reason he went, “Are you going to Nice Nails?” And I actually was! We didn’t talk again until my birthday.

Our first date

Lionel’s POV

On her birthday, I saw a lot of people wishing her a happy birthday, cos we had a couple of WhatsApp groups in common. So I texted her, “Happy birthday!” and she responded with so much excitement, lmao: “LIOONELLLLLL, thank you so much!”

Sasha’s POV

Not Lionel feeling cool because he “thinks” I was excited, please! He behaves so nonchalant sometimes, but he’s in love... lol. Anyway, I went out with my friends over the weekend, and while I was laughing my head off, I looked up and (picture a rom-com: slow-mo effects and all) who did I see? Lionel, crossing the road (gasps). I told my friends, “Ei, guys, see my boss!” (Maybe I should have said senior colleague... lol.)

Lionel’s POV

I was crossing the road to go and eat when I saw her, and our eyes met. I went in to give her a hug. When I sat down, I told Beezy, “Chaley, that’s the girl o!” because I had told the boys about her in the group chat on the first day we met. We started talking, and I really enjoyed her vibe, so I asked her out for drinks. She went like, “Are you asking me out on a date?” I said, “No, it’s just drinks,” lol.

By the end of that first date, I had no doubt I was going to marry her. Picture the scene: we were alone at this rooftop restaurant, the wind blowing. I had gone to use the washroom, and as I walked back, her back faced me, the wind blowing her hair. I stood there for a few seconds, and in that moment I just knew. She was on a call with her brother, Dela, and I told her right after the call ended.

It’s still so crazy to me, because I don’t know how I knew. I just knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

Sasha’s POV

I am so glad he admitted he was loving my vibe, because when I tell you this man is nonchalant... MY DAYS! Anyway, I think he missed a few things, so let’s roll it back. After my induction, he went on a very looooong leave, so I hadn’t seen him in a while, which is why I was so excited about the birthday wish. After he resumed, he told me he would call me. This young man never calls, and after three days he called me on FaceTime (I mean, hoooooww?), and his exact words were, “Let’s get the awkward first FaceTime call out of the way” (exhibit A of him falling in love quickly).

A few days later, he asked to go out for drinks. Honestly, he should have just asked me out on a date lol, but he claims we were just hanging out. It was one of the best dates ever, a well-planned night... and at the end of it, this guy goes like, “I will marry you,” and in true Sasha nature, I rolled my eyes. Now look at us... WE ARE GETTING MARRIED!

The proposal, at a gallery

The proposal, at The Mix
Lionel’s POV

I started planning this with Lisa (OMG, I appreciate her so much). Somewhere in March, I called her and said I wanted to propose to Sasha. I knew I wanted it at The Mix, in the gallery, so I made some enquiries, and luckily the person who picked up had helped organise a proposal there before. Shoutout to Emefa at The Mix, so so helpful! The hardest part was keeping it all from Sasha, because I am literally always on the phone with her. But we found a way.

Sasha’s POV

So on one random day, my girl Yuki dropped a bomb in the group chat by casually telling us she was getting married. To say I was confused would be an understatement. A month later, we got an invitation to the wedding dinner. Looook, when I tell you they were committed to the plot, it was no joke.

Then a work trip came up around the time I had booked The Mix, which meant I was going to miss my own proposal, so I was lowkey panicking. I spoke to my amazing boss, who did not know I was planning a proposal (we were still very lowkey about the relationship at work), so I explained without giving too many details, and she managed to get me a flight back in time. It all worked out, I guess. I landed in Ghana and went straight for a haircut (I had to look good for my wife-to-be). Lisa and I even changed the way we saved each other’s contacts: she was Aunty Olivia, and I was Kwamena CFCC. Whatever happened, she would say, “Don’t worry, I will handle it.”

Sasha’s POV

In my head, Lionel was out of the country, yet he kept asking me what I was going to wear and got so frustrated about my dress (and my afro clip-in!) that I wondered why he was so stressed.

Then Lisa showed up so we could “dress together,” with her makeup kit, chair and all, and a friend sent a snap of a blown-up poster: “Welcome to the celebration of Yuki and her man.” I was like, okay, something is up, but it cannot be a proposal. Lionel is not even in Ghana yet. I even told Lisa how I would want my proposal to be, and she looked at me like I was going crazy. Only to show up and find my man standing there with flowers... Likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Lionel’s POV

I was lowkey nervous, waiting for her to walk up. Bear in mind, I had been doing rehearsals at the apartment with Akosua, Anthea and the boys, lmao. (I actually really love my friends, man.) Then she walked up the stairs. She was so surprised, and I was so happy, and all I wanted was for her to walk to me so I could hug her. When we were finally together, I forgot everyone else was there. I held her close and whispered a few words, just for her, to help her calm down, the kind of things only she will ever hear from me. Then I got down on one knee, I proposed, and she said YES!

Our POV

So yeah, that’s about it. Three very important stories, but it has been so much more. It has been so amazing spending time together, and we cannot wait to be married.
